A variety of algae that grows well in fresh water. It is a blue-green algae which is similar  to sea vegetables such as dulse, kelp, nori, kombu, arame, wakame, and chlorella. Spirulina is considered one of the highest quality, most digestible sources of complete protein found in any food source.

As a complete protein, spirulina contains all the essential amino acids necessary to support the human dietary functions. Spirulina also contains many other important phytonutrients, such as carotenoids, essential fatty acids, including hard-to-find gamma-linoleic acid for your heart and joint health, vitamin B12 and other  minerals such as iron, magnesium, calcium, selenium, and zinc.

Due to spirulina's rich nutrient content and highly available and abundant protein, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization has identified it as a potential tool in the fight against widespread malnutrition.
